....or the rebirth of the artist!

Its the beginning of a new year.  This year I plan to create, paint, draw, sew, fabricate, doodle, knit, crochet and the myriad of other things my artistic brain flits off with a passion to do at any given moment.  Sometimes my brain feels like a string-art project.  It veers slightly with each creative rebound to the next goal, bouncing back and forth and all over the place.

So far this year has seen me emerging from my period of artist block to actually create new fantasy work and paint again.  I managed to work on some sewing over the holidays and some illuminated calligraphy, which to me is mere doodling.  This is the kind of “greasing the wheels” that has snapped me out of the period of low creativity to produce one of the nicest paintings I’ve done in a long time.

Introducing:  BABY FANTAIL

This is hopefully the beginning of a series of baby mermaids coming up.  I’m also tossing around the idea of doing ink drawings of them to pitch for a possible coloring book idea.  I was doing image searches for an adult, female mermaid and suddenly recalled some underwater baby photos I had seen recently.  I can’t explain why, but it just felt RIGHT.  The pieces fell into place with the frilly gold fish tail and fins and the little charmer above was the result.

I can’t think of a better way to start a new year.  I’ve acquired a grandson this last year, had my daughter return from a month in Germany with her army husband to live locally once again, managed to own and maintain my own adorable little 1906 home for a year now and rediscovered my muse!  I’m so full of artistic ideas and projects I feel my brain might burst.

I wish you all the best of luck in this new year with your own goals and resolutions.  Bring on the coffee pot and bring me my paints!
